Is there anyone who hasn’t heard of Marks & Spencers? With over 21 million shoppers going into their stores every week, it’s no surprise to learn that they’re one of the UK’s leading retailers. It all started with Michael Marks and his penny bazaar in Hartlepool selling toys from his native country, Poland. Then Thomas Spencer joined in 1894 from which originated the name ‘Marks and Spencer’. In fact, one of the original penny bazaars is still open today in the Grainger Market in Newcastle upon Tyne and is the smallest of the 800 plus M&S stores today.

Marks and Spencer went on to selling only British made goods in the 20th century and had its clothes manufactured under the infamous “St Michael” brand, being a name borne out of “Michael Marks”. They became famous for their generous refund policy whereby they would give a full refund if you presented a receipt, irrespective of when you made the purchase. Today, they merely operate a 35-day refund policy which is still the most generous on the high street.

Anyway, these days M&S have over 800 stores in over 30 countries, with approx. 600 of those being in the UK. Most of the UK stores now sell both clothes and food and some even sell homewares, furniture and technology.
